Write a melancholy fictional scene about Shane, who steals things for his nest. He is recovering from a concussion and a broken collarbone, and hospital doctors have told him to stop taking his suppressants. As the resulting pseudo-heat makes him emotional and uncomfortable, show him gathering comfort in his nest of pilfered items and longing for Ilya, the alpha who has not agreed to be his alpha.
Include Shane pulling up his sweatshirt hood and hiding his good hand inside its sleeve, then breathing in the collar and noticing that he can barely smell the Earl Grey and salt scent that should remind him of Ilya. Though Ilya may not know about Shane’s years-old stockpile, its contents no longer smell enough like him to soothe Shane’s instincts. Shane checks the Boston game score, which is still tied, and remembers texting Ilya a simple “hey” early in the second period.
Show Shane trying to resist giving in to his longing. He recalls the doctor’s cheerful reassurance that he may be uncomfortable for a day or two, but the pseudo-heat should not be as intense as a regular heat. He wants to hear Ilya’s deep, Russian-accented voice reassure him that he will be okay and that his hormones are making him emotional, but he keeps that desperation to himself. He snuggles further into the nest and dozes while waiting for a reply he is not sure will come.
End with Shane carefully tipping over and burrowing beneath pillows scented with his parents: his father’s cotton and dirt blending with his mother’s woody citrus. Stay with Shane as his lower abdomen cramps and his emotions tighten, feelings he does not want to acknowledge.
